My journey into Creative Art Therapies
My background is as a fine art painter with a lifelong fascination with the human condition — this thing called life that we are all navigating. Art has always been a place of healing for me. Over time, I became disillusioned with the competitive and material focus of the commercial art world and felt drawn back to what first attracted me to creativity: its power to heal, to reveal truth, and to support personal evolution. This led me to postgraduate training in youth and community development, and later to a Master’s degree at Whitecliffe.
During my Master’s, I completed an arts-based autoethnographic and heuristic research thesis exploring personal and intergenerational experiences of trauma, identity, and belonging through creative practice. This research deepened my understanding of how creative expression helps uncover hidden emotions, generate insight, and create meaning from life experiences. I witnessed how art can become a language for what is difficult to say, and a pathway toward integration and healing.
I have worked with people of all ages and backgrounds, supporting growth and resilience within safe, inclusive spaces. In this work, creativity becomes a way to understand yourself more deeply, connect with others, and re-story your life — helping you reshape personal narratives, reclaim agency, and move toward transformation.
At Wonky Star Creative Arts Therapy, I bring together my artistic training, therapeutic knowledge, and community development experience to create an environment where your experiences are respected, your voice is heard, and your creativity becomes a bridge to healing, discovery, and growth. My journey as a therapist is lived, practiced, and ongoing. I don’t believe in perfection as an endpoint — I believe in process. When we normalize the reality that we are all journeying like wonky stars — imperfect, searching, and evolving — we make space for compassion, collective support, and connection, rather than competition. Healing happens in that shared human space.

Creating a safe, welcoming space
When I work with someone, the most important thing is to create a space that feels safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental. I want clients to know that they are seen, heard, and respected exactly as they are, and that their pace and process are honoured.
I hope that, in our sessions, clients feel supported, empowered, and free to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through creative expression. I aim to foster a sense of calm, curiosity, and self-compassion, so that each person leaves the space feeling acknowledged, understood, and connected to their own inner resources.
For me, therapy is not about “fixing” anything — it’s about holding space for reflection, discovery, and growth, and walking alongside someone as they navigate their journey with creativity, insight, and resilience.

The wonky star philosophy
Through creative expression, movement, and art-making, I walk alongside clients, offering support, encouragement, and tools to help them find connection, insight, and their own path forward. My approach honours Māori principles of life — including the importance of whānau (family and community), wairua (spiritual wellbeing), tinana (physical health), hinengaro (mental and emotional health), whakapapa (ancestral connection), whenua (connection to place), and tikanga (cultural practice and values) — fostering a holistic, culturally aware framework for growth and resilience.
"Trudy created such a warm and understanding environment. I felt truly seen and supported, which allowed me to explore my feelings in ways I never thought possible."
“I felt a blissful sanctuary in the sessions — a space to sit with my feelings and reflect on how far I have come over time. The structure Trudy provides is gentle yet flexible, allowing each of us to follow our own impulses. The opening and closing group connections create a sense of cohesion and shared experience.”
“Trudy has given me space to do my own thing, while gently encouraging me to explore beyond my comfort zone. The group has helped me lose myself in the creative process, making my emotions visible and giving me clarity I often don’t get at home. It’s a safe, unique environment that supports growth and self-discovery.”
"Being creative with art materials while talking and sharing in a non-judgemental space led to so many insightful moments for me. The sessions felt natural and enjoyable, and I felt an easy, genuine connection throughout."
“Creative Arts Therapy has allowed me to reflect on myself in new ways. The prompts and guidance helped me explore my hopes for the future and connect with my emotions outside of everyday priorities. Trudy’s facilitation creates a space where the group feels supportive, connected, and energised.”
“Through these sessions, I have been able to make decisions prioritising myself for the first time in years. Trudy’s guidance, combined with the creative process, has been an important aid alongside other therapy I’m doing. The group’s diversity is embraced and respected, making it a truly inclusive space.”
