My journey into creative arts therapy
My interest in Creative Arts Therapy (CAT) grew from a lifelong fascination with art as a tool for connection and understanding. With a background in fine arts, I’ve always been drawn to how creative expression can reveal hidden emotions, spark insight, and foster meaningful change. Over the years, I worked extensively in youth and community development, roles that highlighted the power of creativity not just as a form of self-expression, but as a practical tool for processing emotions, building resilience, and developing a sense of belonging.
My Master’s thesis at Whitecliffe further explored these ideas through arts-based autoethnographic and heuristic research, investigating personal and intergenerational experiences, trauma, and identity through creative processes. This work reinforced my belief in the transformative potential of combining creative practice with clinical therapy.
These experiences led me to establish Wonky Star Creative Arts Therapy, a space where I can offer trauma-informed, client-led creative therapy to individuals and groups. At Wonky Star, I integrate my artistic training, therapeutic knowledge, and community development experience to create a supportive, inclusive, and empowering environment, where people can explore emotions, process life events, and grow through creativity.

Creating a safe, welcoming space
When I work with someone, the most important thing is to create a space that feels safe, welcoming, and non-judgmental. I want clients to know that they are seen, heard, and respected exactly as they are, and that their pace and process are honoured.
I hope that, in our sessions, clients feel supported, empowered, and free to explore their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through creative expression. I aim to foster a sense of calm, curiosity, and self-compassion, so that each person leaves the space feeling acknowledged, understood, and connected to their own inner resources.
For me, therapy is not about “fixing” anything — it’s about holding space for reflection, discovery, and growth, and walking alongside someone as they navigate their journey with creativity, insight, and resilience.

The wonky star philosophy
Beyond my qualifications, I bring empathy, curiosity, and a deep respect for each person’s unique journey. I believe that everyone is a “wonky star” at times — navigating life’s challenges, sometimes off course, or unsure of which direction to take.
I don’t discriminate by background, status, or circumstance. In my work, I aim to hold a space where people can be themselves fully, feel guided without judgment, and explore their inner world with curiosity and safety. My role is to walk alongside clients, offering support, encouragement, and creative tools to help them find connection, insight, and their own path forward.
"Trudy created such a warm and understanding environment. I felt truly seen and supported, which allowed me to explore my feelings in ways I never thought possible."
“I felt a blissful sanctuary in the sessions — a space to sit with my feelings and reflect on how far I have come over time. The structure Trudy provides is gentle yet flexible, allowing each of us to follow our own impulses. The opening and closing group connections create a sense of cohesion and shared experience.”
“Trudy has given me space to do my own thing, while gently encouraging me to explore beyond my comfort zone. The group has helped me lose myself in the creative process, making my emotions visible and giving me clarity I often don’t get at home. It’s a safe, unique environment that supports growth and self-discovery.”
“Creative Arts Therapy has allowed me to reflect on myself in new ways. The prompts and guidance helped me explore my hopes for the future and connect with my emotions outside of everyday priorities. Trudy’s facilitation creates a space where the group feels supportive, connected, and energised.”
“Through these sessions, I have been able to make decisions prioritising myself for the first time in years. Trudy’s guidance, combined with the creative process, has been an important aid alongside other therapy I’m doing. The group’s diversity is embraced and respected, making it a truly inclusive space.”
